Refresh fast enough to catch it. Slow enough to stay sane.

Pick an auto-refresh interval for tickets, restocks, auctions, CI builds, dashboards, and live threads. The calculator shows request load, miss window, and the practical setting to use.

Good starting intervals

Use caseStart withWhy
Tickets8 to 15sFast enough near drop time, still reasonable.
Restocks30 to 60sStock changes rarely need second-by-second polling.
Auctions5 to 10sOnly use close to the end.
CI builds30 to 90sBuilds usually take minutes, not seconds.
Dashboards60 to 300sSlow intervals protect analytics and admin tools.

Rules that keep it practical

  • Use the shortest interval only during the small window when the change matters.
  • Watch fewer tabs. Five tabs at 10 seconds is 1,800 requests per hour.
  • On login, queue, checkout, or account pages, slow down and follow the site's rules.
  • For alerts, watch for text changes instead of staring at the tab.
