Privacy Policy

Short version: Subtitle content is fetched and downloaded entirely inside your browser. We do not collect, store, or transmit the subtitle text of any video you download. The Pro translate feature sends subtitle text to our server for AI translation only when you explicitly request it.

1. What this extension does NOT collect

The subtitle or caption content of any video you download. All caption fetching and file generation happens locally in your browser.
Your YouTube account credentials, cookies, or session tokens. The extension reads caption track URLs from the page you are viewing but never transmits authentication data.
Your browsing history outside of the YouTube page you have open when you click the extension icon.
Video content, audio, or any media files. This extension downloads subtitle text files only.
Personal information unless you voluntarily provide it (for example, your email to activate Pro or subscribe to the newsletter).

2. What we do collect

A randomly generated device ID. Generated once and stored in chrome.storage.local. This ID is used for license verification (Pro users) and anonymous funnel event counting (install, first download, upgrade page view). The device ID is a random string and is not linked to your identity.
Your email address and license status, if you purchase a Pro subscription. Stored on our license server at peakproductivity.online/api and with Stripe for payment processing. We never see your payment card details.
Subtitle text you send for AI translation (Pro only). When you use the Pro AI translation feature, the subtitle text of the selected track is sent to our server at peakproductivity.online/youtube-subtitle-downloader/api/translate, which forwards it to our translation provider (GLM AI). Only the subtitle text and target language are sent. No video ID, no account data, no personal information.
Your email address, if you opt in to our newsletter. This is stored in our SendSimple list and you can unsubscribe at any time.

3. Local storage

The extension stores the following data locally in your browser using chrome.storage.local:

Settings: your preferred format (SRT/VTT/TXT) and language preference.
Daily quota counter: how many downloads you have used today (resets at midnight local time).
License cache: your Pro status, cached for 24 hours so the extension works offline.
Recent download history: video titles and download timestamps kept locally, never transmitted.
Device ID: a random local identifier as described above.

None of this data is transmitted to external servers except the device ID and license email as described in Section 2.

4. Permissions justification

storage: saves settings, quota counter, license cache, and download history locally in your browser.
activeTab: reads the YouTube page's player data to find available caption tracks when you click the extension icon. Only fires on demand, never in the background.
scripting: supports the activeTab caption track enumeration. Never runs in the background or on pages you have not explicitly opened.
downloads: saves the generated SRT/VTT/TXT file to your system's Downloads folder.
host_permissions: youtube.com: required to read caption track data from YouTube video pages you are actively viewing.
host_permissions: peakproductivity.online: used for license verification, Pro translate API, and anonymous funnel events. No wildcard URL access.

5. Third-party services

Stripe: processes Pro subscription payments. Stripe receives your email and payment details directly. We never see your card number.
GLM AI (via z.ai): processes Pro AI translation requests. Receives only the subtitle text you choose to translate and the target language code. GLM's privacy policy applies to data they process.
SendSimple: email list provider for the optional newsletter. Hosted on infrastructure we control.
Google / Chrome Web Store: distributes the extension. We see only aggregate install counts.

No third-party advertising networks, no analytics SDKs (Google Analytics, Mixpanel, etc.), and no tracking pixels are loaded by this extension.

6. Subtitle content and copyright

This extension downloads caption files that YouTube makes available to viewers of a video. Captions are user-permitted text content. The extension does not circumvent DRM, does not download video or audio, and is not a video downloader. Users are responsible for complying with YouTube's Terms of Service and applicable copyright law when using downloaded subtitle files.

YouTube Subtitle Downloader is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or in any way connected to YouTube or Google.

7. Data deletion

To delete all locally stored extension data: open Chrome, go to Extensions, find YouTube Subtitle Downloader, click "Details", then "Site settings", and clear stored data. Or uninstall the extension.

To delete your Pro license and email from our server: email support@peakproductivity.online. We will delete your record within 7 days.

8. Children's privacy

This extension is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

9. Changes to this policy

If we make material changes to this policy, we will update the "Last updated" date above and, where required, notify users via a prominent notice in the extension.
