The short version

Your highlights and notes are stored locally on your device by default. Cloud sync is opt-in and encrypted. The only time any of your content leaves your device is when you choose to run an AI summary, and then only the highlighted text you selected is sent for processing. We never sell your data, and the page content you do not highlight is never collected.

1. What Highlightly does

Highlightly is a Chrome extension that lets you highlight text on web pages and PDFs, attach notes, organize highlights into a searchable library with tags, and optionally summarize a page's highlights with AI and export them. Core highlighting works entirely on your device.

2. Data stored on your device

The following is stored locally in your browser using Chrome's storage API and is never sent to us unless you turn on cloud sync:

3. What Highlightly does not collect

Highlightly does not read, collect, or transmit:

The content script only acts on the text you select to highlight and on re-applying your own saved highlights to a page.

4. Permissions and why

5. AI summaries

AI summaries are optional and only run when you click to summarize. When you do, the highlighted text from that page is sent over HTTPS to our summarization endpoint at peakproductivity.online, which uses a third-party language model provider to generate the bullet points, and the result is returned to you. We do not store the highlighted text after the summary is generated, and the page content you did not highlight is never sent.

6. Cloud sync (optional)

Cloud sync is off by default. If you turn it on, your highlights and notes are encrypted on your device before they are uploaded, and stored only as an encrypted blob associated with your license so they can sync across your devices. The encryption key is derived from your license key and never sent to us, so we cannot read the contents of the encrypted blob. You can turn sync off at any time, and the "delete all data" action in the extension removes the synced copy from our server as well.

7. Delete your data

You can delete all of your highlights, notes, and library data at any time from the extension with a one-click "delete all data" action. Uninstalling the extension also removes all locally stored data. If you used cloud sync, the delete action removes the synced copy as well.

8. Subscription and payment data

Pro subscriptions are processed by Stripe. Highlightly does not handle payment card data directly. When you complete a checkout, Stripe shares a subscription status and a customer reference with peakproductivity.online, which is used to activate your license and email your license key. Stripe's privacy policy applies to payment processing: https://stripe.com/privacy. An email address you provide at checkout is used only for your receipt, license key, and billing notices, and is not added to marketing lists without your consent.

9. Newsletter

If you subscribe to our newsletter on the welcome page, your email address is stored by our email provider and used only to send the newsletter. You can unsubscribe in one click from any email.

10. No sale of data, no third-party tracking

We do not sell, rent, or trade your data. Highlightly contains no Google Analytics, no advertising pixels, and no third-party tracking libraries inside the extension.

11. Children

Highlightly is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.

12. Changes to this policy

If this policy changes in a material way, the updated version will be posted at https://peakproductivity.online/web-highlighter/privacy/ with a new date at the top. Significant changes will also be noted in the extension's release notes.

13. Contact
